IRON

As the iron has been an essential metal in today's world, production and consumption of iron in a country is closely linked to that of country's development and economical strength. It is vital for a country. The potentiality and possibility of operating and evaluating iron deposits are vital for a country. In Turkey, the final end iron consumption was 207 kg per person; it has increased to 218kg in 2004 in parallel to production. EU's average in 2004 was 360 kg.

World's ROM iron ore reserves is around 160 billion tonnes, base reserve is around 370 billion tonnes.
So far, approximately 900 iron formations have been found,500 of these have been regarded to be economical . Iron ore reserves suitable for integrated iron&steel plants in Turkey are located in Sivas-Erzincan-Malatya, Kayseri-Adana, Kırşehir-Kırıkkale-Ankara and Balıkesir regions.

Our iron deposits can be generally classified as being small and medium.. 88% of those are very small ,11% are small and 1% in medium sized deposits. Medium sized deposits are Divriği A and B heads, Hekimhan-Hasançelebi,Deveci and Sakarya-Çamdağ.. Iron ore reserves determined after conducting studies mainly classified in two groups, based on utilizing iron&steel plants.

1. Exploitable Deposits 
Our iron ore reserves suitable for direct charge to feed high furnaces are 132.100.000 tonnes. Information on grade and reserve ratio of the 23 iron ore deposits suitable for operated or operatable iron deposits are given below.


II. Iron Ore Reserves with problems
We have 50 deposits faced with the problem of low grade and/or grades, which contain highly hazardous compounds. Current data reveals that deposits have  1.3 billion tonnes of resources available with grade varient of 15-20%. In some of those deposits that contain rich or suitable ore, selective mining is carried out or commingled with ores obtained from other mines thus hazardous compounds are reduced to desired ratios have been partly  processed.. It is not possible to process them witihout developing suitable  enirchment methods  to eliminate  hazardous compounds from the majority of deposits.

As at today, there are 23  deposits  in operation or in exploitable nature with total of 132 million tonnes.

Our exploitable iron resources (reserves) are in the level to meet country’s ore demand for 10-15 years.

Country’s annual iron need, which is around 4 million tonnes  is obtained from internal resources for remaining, it is being imported at the cost 150-200 million dollars (as ROM Ore) Majority of iron importaiton is scrap iron. Each year Turkey has been importing 10-15 million tonnes of scrap iron, which makes her to be one the world’s  biggest scrap importer.

MAGNETITE

Magnetite, in a spinal structure is a ferromagnetic mineral known as Ferro-ferric oxide and also called iron 2-3 oxide. Chemical formula is Fe3O4. This shows that it has two different values at the same time (2+ and 3+). The curie temperature of magnetite is 858K
